Let’s Clear the Air About Hemp-Derived THC

Updated: Aug 13

Is Hemp-Derived THC Fake? (Spoiler: Nope.)

Let’s get one thing straight: THC derived from hemp is not artificial.

We hear it all the time — people assuming that if it comes from hemp, it must be synthetic, watered down, or somehow “less real.” But that’s just not how chemistry works. Or plants. Or the law.

So let’s clear the air.

Kite Soda cofounders in a Minnesota hemp field, where their work in hemp agriculture inspired the creation of their low-dose THC soda brand.

Cofounders Andrew and Diane Afrooz — building Kite from the ground up (literally)

Same THC. Same effects. Different plant.

Delta-9 THC — the molecule that gives cannabis its “high” — is the same chemical compound whether it’s extracted from traditional marijuana or industrial hemp.

It’s not a knockoff. It’s not “weed lite.”It’s the same active compound.

The difference? Hemp is legally defined as cannabis with less than 0.3% Delta-9 THC by dry weight. Under the 2018 Farm Bill, that makes it legal to grow, harvest, and extract — as long as it follows the rules. And we do.

So what does “hemp-derived” actually mean?

It means our THC is extracted from hemp plants that are grown and tested under strict regulations — especially in states like Minnesota, where laws require it to be grown, processed, and certified in-state.

That means:

  • It’s not made in a lab. It’s grown in real dirt under real sun.

  • It’s regulated and traceable. (Ours is tested and certified “fit for commerce” by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture.)

  • It’s legal and safe. You don’t need a medical card or a shady workaround to enjoy it.

Hemp-derived THC isn’t a loophole. It’s a legal, intentional, and plant-based path to a functional, low-dose experience.

What about synthetic THC?

Totally different story.

Synthetic THC — like Spice or K2 — is man-made, chemically altered, and often unregulated. It’s not the same molecule, it’s not from a plant, and it’s definitely not what you’ll find in a can of Kite.

We don’t mess with that. Ever.

So why does this matter?

Because words like “hemp” and “THC” still confuse people — and honestly, that’s fair. The cannabis industry is still young, and the rules aren’t always clear.

But we believe in transparency.

We believe you deserve to know what you’re sipping, how it’s made, and where it comes from. From growing our own hemp in Minnesota to testing every batch, we do it all with intention. Because we believe feeling good starts with knowing what you’re sipping.
